BarCamp Boston 4
This past weekend’s BarCamp Boston 4 was my first BarCamp. It definitely lived up to my expecations, which were fairly high. I’ll post about some highlights (on Designer’s Scroll, probably) once I’ve rounded up the names of the leaders of a few key sessions. Click on this image for the full version, which gives and idea of the excellent turnout:

Designer authorship in multiplayer games
Reading Leigh’s post to her Gamasutra blog today definitely sparked some designer-angst in me regarding a game concept I’m currently wrestling with. I want to design the game in such a way that will encourage meaningful interactions between players and encourage them to think critically about their relationship with their allies. Succeeding at this would probably require carefully...

SHIFT Radio with Matthew Wegner
Matt talked about Blurst, Fun-Motion, Flashbang’s history, and the future of indie games on the SHIFT podcast today. It’s good to hear they’re looking at a...

Soren Johnson gives "The Case for Metacritic"
Just read Soren Johnson’s blog post, The Case for Metacritic. I’m really glad there are some highly visible, vocal folks talking about this and not just going along with the current trend of spiting Metacritic. I agree with Soren that even the mere fact that large publishers like EA are taking anything in addition to sales into account when judging how well they did is a good thing. I...

Some nice details in AlphaBounce (flash game)
Just played a few minutes of an interesting Breakout-style game with adventure/RPG elements, called AlphaBounce (tragic name, IMO). I’d like to quickly call out a few small details of this game that I really like. I’ll post the images (with text, I hope… still not too familiar with Tumblr) after this. When the paddle/mouse goes outside of the game’s screen (it’s...

To tumbl or not to tumbl
Corvus Elrod recently tweeted about how he’s going to use his Tumblr account as a “public notepad”, which sounds just like what Tumblr is good for. I’ve been having similar thoughts, because I’d like to have a place to put random, if well-chosen and thought-out “brain dropping” (doesn’t that sound appealing?) related to games, media, web,...
